SAND AND GREASE SEPARATION
Sand separation unitA sand separation unit is used mainly in the treatment of screened water to separate quick-settling solid matter from wastewater and, if necessary, the grease rising to the surface of the water. In smaller plants, a compact sand separation unit can be installed in a steel basin, in which case no other sand separator is required in the plant. The grease is separated using air, which makes the grease rise up to the surface of the basin, from where it is scooped up into a grease collection basin.
However, if the plant is of a larger size, the sand-separating equipment is installed in concrete basins. In this case, the sand that collects on the bottom of the basin is transferred for further treatment to a sand classifier using a pump and a scraper device.
Sand classifierThe sand classifier is built in a compact steel basin, where the sand is allowed to settle at the bottom and then transferred with a screw conveyor into a container. The equipment can also be used to separate organic matter from the sand by washing and to return the matter back to the process. In this case, the sand becomes less smelly and its volume decreases. To minimise odour nuisance, the sand can also be discharged into a plastic screenings sock, into which the compressed sand is collected.
